Dr. Paul Monga holds the Endowed Research Chair in Experimental Pathology and is the Vice-Chair of Experimental Pathology, Department of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Monga is a Professor of Pathology (Division of Experimental Pathology) and a Professor of Medicine (Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition). He also serves as the Director of the McGowan Institute’s Cellular Approaches to Tissue Engineering and Regeneration (CATER) Training Program, Assistant Dean for the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), Associate Director of the University of Pittsburgh Drug Discovery Institute (UPDDI),  and is the Founding Director of the NIH, NIDDK funded Pittsburgh Liver Research Center (PLRC).  In addition, he is a Faculty Member of the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute’s Molecular and Cellular Biology Program.

Dr. Monga holds an MD degree from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, and Punjab University, Chandigarh, India. He did his Postdoctoral Fellowships in Gastroenterology/Molecular Biology at Temple University Fels Cancer Institute, Philadelphia, and the Veterans Association Medical Center in Washington, DC, and a Research Fellowship in Gastroenterology/Molecular Biology at the Georgetown University Hospital and Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, DC. He did his final postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh in the department of Pathology in the area of liver regeneration.

Dr. Monga is a member of several professional societies and has been the recipient of several prestigious awards. He is a member of the American Association of the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), American Association of Cancer Research (AACR), American Gastroenterology Association (AGA) and American Society of Investigative Pathology (ASIP). He was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigations Society (ASCI) and PLUTO (American Association of University Pathologists). Dr. Monga has been recently awarded the Robbins Distinguished Educator Award from ASIP. He has also been recognized with the Takeda Distinguished Research Award in the Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology Section from the American Physiological Society. Most recently, Dr. Monga was named Vice President Elect at ASIP.

Dr. Monga is the Editor-in-Chief of Seminars in Liver Disease and is an Associate Editor for the Annual Reviews of Pathology. He continues to serve at various leadership roles nationally especially in the ASIP and AASLD.

Dr. Monga’s research interests are:

• Cellular and molecular signaling in liver development, liver regeneration, and liver cancer
• Personalized medicine in HCC
• Understanding the basis of liver injury, fibrosis, and cirrhosis
• Regenerative medicine
• Cell-cell adhesion, blood bile barrier, and cholestasis
