Multidisciplinary Education

As pioneers in the field of regenerative medicine, McGowan Institute faculty and staff are both obligated and delighted to contribute to the growth of the field by participating in the career development of young scientists. The McGowan Institute and its partners provide the country’s largest breadth of training programs in regenerative medicine – for undergraduate students through post-doctoral trainees– sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In addition, the local seminar series invites presenters from institutions around the world to discuss their research with faculty and trainees.

The training programs that are available are:
me1i

  • Pathology Summer Undergraduate Research Program
For students considering graduate school or a career in biomedical research.
  • Cellular Approaches to Tissue Engineering and Regeneration (CATER)
For predoctoral students in bioengineering and cellular and molecular pathology
  • Cardiovascular Bioengineering Training Program
Prepares students for independent careers in biomedical cardiovascular research
  • Biomechanics in Regenerative Medicine (BiRM)
Prepares students for independent careers with emphasis on the biomechanics of tissue
  • Pathology Post-doctoral Training Program
Development of Pathology post-doctoral fellows as independent investigators
  • Angiopathy Training Program
  • Bioengineering Seminar Program

The principal academic partners are the Department of Bioengineering and Schools of Health Sciences.

Pathology Summer Undergraduate Research Program

  • The Summer Undergraduate Research Program is designed for students seriously considering graduate school or a career in biomedical research
  • The goal of this program is to provide students the opportunity for a hands-on research experience.
  • Each student will conduct an independent research project with the guidance from a faculty member.
  • At the end of the ten-week program, the student will present his/her research to members of the department at a Research Presentation Day.
  • The program is sponsored and administered by the Cellular and Molecular Pathology Graduate Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and is administered by the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program.

MORE

Cellular Approaches to Tissue Engineering and Regeneration (CATER)

  • For predoctoral students in bioengineering and cellular and molecular pathology.
  • Prepares students for independent careers in cellular and tissue-based therapy for human disease and injury.
  • Faculty from the departments of Bioengineering and Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh, and the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
  • More specialized and numerous training opportunities than can be obtained in a single university department.
  • A first-of-its-kind program, funded by the NIH.

Biomechanics in Regenerative Medicine (BiRM)

  • For predoctoral students from engineering and other quantitative sciences.
  • Prepares students for independent careers in regenerative medicine research with emphasis on the biomechanics of tissue.
  • Faculty from the University of Pittsburgh departments of Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, Orthopedic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Urology, and the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, as well as faculty from the Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Departments from Carnegie Mellon University.
  • More specialized and numerous training opportunities than can be obtained in a single university department.
  • Funded by the NIH.

MORE

Pathology Post-doctoral Training Program (PPRTP)

  • Dedicated to promoting the career development of Pathology post-doctoral fellows as independent investigators.
  • Fosters the interaction between Pathology fellows and faculty.
  • Facilitates the integration into the local research environment, emphasizing the fields of transplantation, tissue remodeling and engineering, molecular diagnostics and biomedical informatics.
  • One year, subject to a 6 month review. Renewable for a second year.
  • Sponsored by the UPMC Department of Pathology.

MORE

Angiopathy Training Program

  • Students who have completed 1 year of graduate training are eligible for funding.
  • For predoctoral students who have an interest in studying diverse aspects of the vasculature, while enlarging their exposure to various aspects of pathology.
  • Training faculty are part of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
  • Funded by the NIH.
