Dr. Jie Fan is a tenured Professor of Surgery and Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a Research Investigator and the Director of the Surgical Research at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.  Dr. Fan received his medical degrees from Second Military Medical University and Shanghai Second Medical University. He completed his doctoral and post-doctoral trainings at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Dr. Fan has long been focusing on cellular and molecular mechanisms of cell priming in trauma, sepsis, and organ injury. He is a principal investigator of a number of research projects supported by NIH and Department of Veterans Affairs. His team has explored several novel mechanisms of receptor crosstalk and cell-cell interaction underlying post-trauma systemic inflammation and organ injury.

Dr. Fan is the author of numerous refereed articles, invited perspective articles, and book chapters.  Dr. Fan also serves as an editorial board member, deputy editor-in-chief, and reviewer for over 40 journals and a study section member for NIH, DOD, VA, and British funding organizations, as well as an advisory peer reviewer for American Institution of Biological Sciences.  Dr. Fan presented lectures in many national and international institutes and conferences.  Dr. Fan is a recipient of Excellence in Government Award – Outstanding Contribution to Medical Science.

The research projects in Dr. Fan’s laboratory include cellular and molecular mechanism of post-trauma and -sepsis immune dysfunction and cell-cell interacting mechanism of acute lung injury
