George V. Mazariegos, MD

Dr. George Mazariegos is a pediatric liver and intestine transplant surgeon and the Director of the Hillman Center for Pediatric Transplantation at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.  He is on Active Staff at the Children’s Home of Pittsburgh, a Pediatric Specialty Hospital, and on the Coverage Staff at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside.  At the University of Pittsburgh, he is a Professor of Surgery, the Jamie Lee Curtis Endowed Chair in Transplantation Surgery.  He also holds joint appointments in Pitt’s Departments of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Mazariegos earned his medical degree at Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Illinois.  He served his residency in general surgery at Spectrum Health, Michigan State University, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and fellowships in surgical critical care and hepatic and multivisceral transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1992, Dr. Mazariegos was the Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program Fellow of the Year at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He joined the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 1994.

Dr. Mazariegos is an active pediatric liver and intestinal transplant surgeon. His main clinical interests are focused on the care of pediatric patients who have liver and/or intestinal disease requiring transplantation. He is a collaborator with the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Center for Rare Disease Therapy (CRDT). He recently initiated leadership of a multicenter learning health system, the Starzl Network for Excellence in Pediatric Transplantation (starzlnetwork.org), designed to facilitate collaboration and innovation in pediatric transplantation.

Dr. Mazariegos’ research interests include:

Patient Centered Research: Dr. Mazariegos  is funded by PCORI to work with the Starzl Network and Transplant Families to develop patient centered research priorities in transplantation via their project PARTNER (PAtient-centered Research in Pediatric Transplant- Engaging families + Recipients).

Application of Health App Technology in Transplantation: Dr Mazariegos leads a seven center A.H.R.Q funded (U18 HS28380-01) Collaboration to study implementation and dissemination of a quality of life survey in transplanted children using Health App Technology across the Starzl Network and Society of Pediatric Liver Transplantation (SPLIT) center network.

Liver Failure and Transplantation:  Clinical conduct of SPLIT database registry in pediatric liver transplantation; Pediatric Unresectable Liver Tumor Observatory (PLUTO); and, pediatric liver transplantation: causes of late graft loss and mortality.

Intestinal Failure and Transplantation:  Pediatric Intestinal Failure Consortium (developing a multi-center consortium for the evaluation and investigation of children with intestinal failure); risk factors in pediatric small bowel transplantation; and, mechanisms and treatment of parenteral nutrition related cholestasis in children with short gut syndrome.

Tolerance Mechanisms:  Weaning of immunosuppression in long-term recipients of liver transplantation; and, evaluation of cytokine polymorphisms in predicting ability to withdraw immunosuppression after transplantation.

Dr. Mazariegos is a much sought-after presenter and is the author/co-author of hundreds of refereed articles, reviews, invited published papers, symposia/conference proceedings, book chapters, and abstracts.
