Spandan Maiti, PhD
Dr. Spandan Maiti is an Associate Professor, in the Bioengineering Department and the Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science Department of the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Maiti received his PhD in Aerospace Engineering with a minor in Computational Science & Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. Prior to this, he received an ME, Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, and a BCE, Civil Engineering, Jadavpur University, India.
An example of Dr. Maiti’s current research is a project to identify the relationship between abnormal flow conditions and changes to the wall that lead to structurally fragile walls in a large cohort of resected aneurysm domes and use this data, combined with patient characteristics, to develop a framework for assessing risk of wall vulnerability. The knowledge generated in this project is expected to positively impact the clinical decision making to improve patient evaluation and care, as well as future research aiming at imaging biomarkers of wall fragility and pharmacological therapies targeting wall weakening processes.
Dr. Maiti serves as a reviewer for numerous scientific journals. Some of these include: Science Advances, Journal of Theoretical Biology, PLOS One, Journal of Biomechanics, Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, and International Journal for Computational Methods in Engineering Science & Mechanics. He is also active with these professional organizations: American Society of Mechanical Engineers, United States Association for Computational Mechanics, and the Society of Engineering Science.
