Ranieri Cancedda, MD
Dr. Ranieri Cancedda is Professor emeritus and past Dean of the Biotechnology School at the University of Genova, Italy. He also served as Coordinator of the PhD program in Biotechnology in Translational Medicine in the same university and as Head of the Laboratory of Regenerative Medicine (Cell Differentiation) of the San Martino-IST National Cancer Research Institute, Genova. He has been the Chairman of the College of the Deans of the Biotechnology Schools of the Italian Universities. He was the Vice Scientific Director of the National Cancer Research Institute in Genova, and the Chairman of the Department of Innovative Therapies in the same Institute.
Prof. Cancedda graduated magna cum laude from the University of Genova, Italy, where he earned his MD degree. He then won a WHO fellowship to Nigeria at the University of Ibadan, Department of Hematology. He also did postdoctoral work as a Research Associate in the Department of Microbiology, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, and was a Visiting Professor at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, Nutley, New Jersey. For more than 10 years, he served as professor of General Biology and Chairman of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biochemistry at the second Medical School, Naples, Italy.
Prof. Cancedda is an Affiliated Faculty Member of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, USA, and he was one of the founders and the first President of the European Tissue Engineering Society, which is now the European Chapter of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS). Dr. Cancedda is currently a Fellow of TERMIS. In June 2013, Prof. Cancedda received the first “Contributions to Literature Award” on behalf of the TERMIS-EU in recognition of the outstanding publication records as a researcher in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In November 2021, he received the TERMIS-EU “Career Achievement Award,” awarded to an established researcher who has made long-term, landmark contributions to the TERM field.
Prof. Cancedda has been invited as keynote speaker and lecturer at many international congresses and meetings, is the author of more than 350 publications in scientific journals (h-index 86; citations >30,000), and inventor in 9 patents. Dr. Cancedda is Field Chief Editor of Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and Specialty Chief Editor of the Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering section.
