Dr. Jonathan H. Waters is a Professor with the Department of Anesthesiology in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.  He also holds a secondary appointment as a Professor in the Swanson School of Engineering, Department of Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh. In addition, he is the chief of Anesthesia Services at Magee Womens Hospital of UPMC and is the Medical Director of the UPMC Patient Blood Management Program as well as the UPMC Bloodless Medicine Program.

Dr. Waters got his Bachelor’s in Physics at Missouri University of Science & Technology. He then earned his medical degree from George Washington University. He did his internship in preliminary surgery at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, which is part of the University of Virginia Affiliated Hospitals. He then did his residency in Anesthesiology at New York University/Bellevue Hospital Center. After holding a position at the Naval Hospital – San Diego with a faculty appointment at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, he moved to the University of California – Irvine.   From there, he moved to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation for 7 years prior to his move to Pittsburgh.

Dr. Waters’ research interests include: 1.) Red cell rheologic changes associated with the administration of anesthetic agents; 2.) Implementation of a comprehensive blood management program and associated patient and economic outcome improvements; and 3.) Impact of amniotic fluid on blood coagulation function

He is a Founding Member of the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management, for which he has also served as president (2007-2009). He is also a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology, International Anesthesia Research Society, American Medical Association, the Allegheny County Medical Society, the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists, and the American Association of Blood Banks.  Dr. Waters is a member of several committees at Magee Womens Hospital in addition to being the Chair, Magee Transfusion Review Committee, and Chair of the UPMC Patient Blood Management Committee.  For the journal, Transfusion, Dr. Waters is on its Editorial Board and is the Associate Editor of the Blood Management Section.  He is also a Contributing Editor of the Obstetric Anesthesia Digest.
