Konstantinos Verdelis, DDS, PhD

Dr. Kostas Verdelis is an Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry/Comprehensive Care, School of Dental Medicine, University of Pittsburgh. Prior to this he worked at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City where he was a postdoctoral fellow.

Dr. Verdelis earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the School of Dentistry, University of Athens, Greece. He went to Columbia University School of Dental Medicine, where he earned his Certificate in Endodontics. He then received his PhD in Oral Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Verdelis is a member of the American Society for Bone & Mineral Research, the International Association for Dental Research, and the American Association of Endodontists.

His research has included grants from the NIH, which allowed him to investigate musculoskeletal repair and regeneration as well as the mechanism of hard tissue mineralization. In addition to the clinical and academic teaching of endodontics, Dr. Verdelis focuses on mineralized tissue research through the use of microcomputed tomography and spectroscopic imaging for:

  • study of the function of matrix proteins in the dental tissues and bone; and
  • anatomical and evaluation of the outcome from clinical procedures studies in endodontics.

Dr. Verdelis is in charge of the in vivo microcomputed tomography CCR core and a consultant for the ex vivo microcomputed tomography core of Allegheny General Hospital (Cardiovascular Research Institute) in Pittsburgh. In this capacity, he is a co-investigator in research projects based in the Medical School, School of Engineering, Hillman Cancer Center, and departments within Carnegie Mellon University and Allegheny General Hospital.
