James H-C. Wang, PhD

Dr. James Wang is Albert B. Ferguson, Jr., Chair Professor and Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is also Director of the MechanoBiology Laboratory in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Additionally, he is Professor of Bioengineering in the Department of Bioengineering and in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

His research is in the area of cell and tissue mechanobiology, with a special interest in elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanism for mechanical loading-induced tendinopathy. His research interests also include improving the biological, biochemical, and biomechanical properties of healing tendons, enthesis, and ligaments with tissue engineering approaches and application of repurposed drugs like metformin to effectively manage chronic pain and repair and regenerate injured tendon.

He has authored 141 peer-reviewed papers (h-index 57, Google Scholar), 30 book chapters, and 246 abstracts. Dr. Wang has served on study sections of the NIH and NSF, and as academic editor, an editorial board member, and reviewer for many scientific journals. He served as the President of the Society of Physical Regulation in Biology and Medicine (SPRBM). He is the Past President of the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS).  He was also elected as Fellow of American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and Fellow of International Orthopaedic Research (FIOR).
