Dr. Vinay Badhwar is the Gordon F. Murray Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, and Executive Chair of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute and Service Line at West Virginia University (WVU) in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Dr. Badhwar completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada, and received his MD from the University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario. After completing his surgical residency at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, and postgraduate training through the McGill University Surgical Scientist Program earning him a M.Sc., he participated in two advanced fellowships: one in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Ottawa, and a second in heart failure/transplant, LVAD, and Mitral Repair at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. From 2002-2011, Dr. Badhwar held numerous institutional leadership positions while practicing in Tampa and Orlando, Florida, while holding an academic appointment to the University of South Florida. Dr. Badhwar was recruited to the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC in 2011 where he served as Associate Professor and Director of Adult Cardiac Surgery. Since 2016, Dr. Badhwar has led West Virginia University’s rapidly expanding cardiovascular and thoracic clinical and academic programs.
Dr. Badhwar is an internationally recognized figure in valvular heart disease and his active research initiatives include:
Regional and national outcome optimization strategies in adult cardiac surgery
Minimally invasive cardiac surgery, including robotic surgery
Transcatheter mitral valve therapy
Surgical therapy of atrial fibrillation
Novel therapies for valvular repair and reconstruction.
Dr. Badhwar serves as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Dr. Badhwar holds multiple leadership appointments in the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the American College of Cardiology, and he is a member of many other professional organizations. Dr. Badhwar is the recipient of multiple awards including the Best Doctors in America for multiple consecutive years. It is of note that Dr. Badhwar and his McGowan Institute collaborators, William Wagner, PhD, and Antonio D’Amore, PhD, received the 2016 Coulter Award for Innovation in bioengineering for their work on a novel biodegradable heart valve.
