Dr. Thomas Gleason is the Ronald V. Pellegrini Endowed Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Chief, Division of Cardiac Surgery of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and he is Co-Director of the Heart and Vascular Institute at UPMC. He is also Director of the Center for Thoracic Aortic Disease and Co-Director of the Center for Heart Valve Disease, and he is a member of the Center for Vascular Remodeling and Regeneration at Pitt. Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, he was Assistant Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago before which he was Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine.
Dr. Gleason got his BA in Chemistry at Middlebury College in Vermont. He then earned his MD from Rush Medical College in Chicago and his MS in Surgery/Immunology from the University of Virginia. He completed residencies in Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery from the University of Virginia and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Gleason’s current research interests include thoracic aortic diseases, including aortic dissection, ascending aortic (vascular) biology, bicuspid valve associated aortopathy, and other heritable disorders of the thoracic aorta (e.g. Marfan syndrome, Loeys-Dietz syndrome, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome). He has distinct clinical interests in aortic valve repair, valve-sparing aortic root reconstruction, and thoracic aortic reconstructions including endovascular aortic stent grafting. He also has interests in transcatheter aortic valve replacement/implantation and the management of cardiac and aortic infections.
Dr. Gleason is a member and/or fellow of several professional and scientific societies, including the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the American Surgical Association, the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, and Alpha Omega Alpha as well as others. He serves on the editorial board of Circulation and is currently a permanent member of the Biotechnology and Surgical Sciences study section of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health. He also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Journal of American College of Cardiology, and several other journals.
Dr. Gleason received the University of Pittsburgh’s Cardiothoracic Surgical Faculty of the Year Award in 2010 and 2015 and was named to Pittsburgh Magazine’s “Best Doctors” in Thoracic Surgery from 2012-2017.
