    Stephen P. Emery, MD

    Dr. Stephen Emery is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, & Reproductive Sciences, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is also the Director of the Center for Innovative Fetal Intervention at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. Dr. Emery’s clinical, education, research, and administrative initiatives revolve around fetal therapy. He is the sole provider of fetal therapy for UPMC. He is the principal instructor of fetal therapy for Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellows, Ob/Gyn residents and medical students of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Emery is a member of the North American Fetal Therapy Network (NAFTNet) and has served as the Chair of the Steering Committee, and as Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee. He is also an active member of the International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society (IFMSS). Dr. Emery is leading an international, evidence-based, ethically-justifiable reassessment of ventriculoamniotic shunting for fetal obstructive hydrocephalus through NAFTNet and IFMSS. He is currently conducting a large animal model of obstructive hydrocephalus in the fetal lamb at the McGowan Center for Preclinical Studies. In collaboration with the Swanson School of Engineering, he has developed a purpose-designed ventriculoamniotic shunt for in-utero treatment of fetal hydrocephalus. Dr. Emery received his MD from the University of Alabama School of Medicine at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama.  He continued his education with a Residency and Fellowship at MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Emery’s professional society memberships include: International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society (2014 – present); North American Fetal Therapy Network (2007 - present); Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (2000 - present);  and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (1991 - present).
