Dr. Ruben Zamora is presently a Research Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. He received his BS in Chemical Engineering and a MS in Radiochemistry at the University of Veszprém (Veszprém, Hungary).
From 1990 to 1992, Dr. Zamora was a Junior Researcher at the Center for Pharmaceutical Chemistry (CQF) in Havana, Cuba. From 1992 to 1994 he was a Visiting Scientist in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Schwarz Pharma A.G. (Monheim, Germany). After finishing his PhD in Pharmacology and Cell Biology at the University of Antwerp (Antwerp, Belgium), he was for a short time a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Medicine until he moved to the US in 1998.
During the period 1998-2000, Dr. Zamora was a Research Fellow in the Department of Surgery in Pitt’s School of Medicine. His fellowship focused on molecular biology under the guidance of Professor Timothy Billiar, MD, Chair of the Department of Surgery. He continued his career in the same Department as Research Assistant Professor (2001-2010), Director of the Laboratory of Pediatric Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and Research Associate Professor (2010-2017).
Dr. Zamora is currently a member of several professional societies which include the Society for Complexity in Acute Illness (SCAI) and the Shock Society. Since August 2016, Dr. Zamora serves as Secretary and Member of SCAI Board of Directors. Dr. Zamora is a reviewer for a number of journals including British Journal of Pharmacology, Journal of Hepatology, Atherosclerosis, Nitric Oxide and Pediatric Research.
Dr. Zamora has served as member of the Animal Research and Care Committee (ARCC) of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (2001-2009), member of the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Gastroenterology (2005-2013), and since 2006 as member of the International Scientific Committee Revista Med (University of Nueva Granada, Bogotá, Colombia).
