    Richard D. Schaub, Jr., PhD

Dr. Richard Schaub is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh.  Also, he is the Senior Director of the Artificial Heart Program at UPMC and the Senior Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support at Procirca.  The UPMC Artificial Heart Program/Procirca is a UPMC program that offers around-the-world medical consultation, physician training, and patient support regarding the implementation of various ventricular assist devices (VADs). Dr. Schaub earned his BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering as well as his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh.  While studying at Pitt, he was the recipient of numerous awards, including the W.M. Keck Merit Fellowship for Bioengineering, the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs Young Investigator Fellowship, the Koyanagi Young Investigator Award, International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps, and the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs Biomedical Engineering Student Fellowship Award (Whitaker Foundation), to name a few. Between October 1985 and June 2020, UPMC’s Artificial Heart Program has supported more than 1400 patients on cardiac assist devices for a period of more than 250,000 days.  Dr. Schaub is an integral team member who has provided much technical experience in support of these statistics.  Dr. Schaub is sought out by members of heart failure programs nationally and internationally regarding establishing their own circulatory support programs and/or providing consultations for use of a particular circulatory support technology. As well, within the VAD industry, he provides patient support worldwide. View a list of Dr. Schaub’s publications here.
