    Patrick J. McMahon, MD

    Dr. Patrick McMahon is a clinician, Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Veterans Administration Pittsburgh Healthcare System and a researcher. His primary interest is comprehensive care for shoulder and elbow problems and he also cares for general orthopedic problems. He continues his research improving the treatment of shoulder instability and rotator cuff tears. He is also a Professor with the UPMC Department of Orthopedics and the University of Pittsburgh, Department of Bioengineering. Dr. McMahon received his MD from Temple University in 1987, fulfilled a 1-year internship at New York University in 1988, served as a Resident in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh until 1992, and completed a Fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in 1994. He was in private practice until 2019 at McMahon Orthopedics & Rehabilitation (MORe) after serving 12 years in academic medicine at UPMC and the University of California, Irvine. Dr. McMahon is editor of the books Current Diagnosis and Treatment in Sports Medicine and Current Diagnosis and Treatment in Orthopedics, has authored over 100 publications, and has been a speaker at numerous international, national, and regional meetings. Dr. McMahon has cared for many professional and college athletes. He was awarded membership in Phi Beta Kappa, and membership in the Society of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. Dr. McMahon is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. View a list of Dr. McMahon’s publications here.
