Marc A. Simon, MD, MS, FACC

Dr. Marc Simon is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Director of Heart Failure Research & Translational Pulmonary Hypertension Research, Medical Director of the Montefiore Clinical & Translational Research Center of the Clinical Translational Science Institute, and an Attending Physician in the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation Section in the Heart and Vascular Institute of the University of Pittsburgh.  He holds secondary appointments in Clinical and Translational Science in the Clinical and Translational Science Institute and in the Department of Bioengineering, both at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Simon graduated from The University of Pennsylvania with a BS degree in Bioengineering in 1994 and went on to receive his MD from the University of Maryland in 1998.  From 1998-2001, he completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Affiliated Hospitals.  He then moved to Pittsburgh where he completed Fellowships in Cardiology and Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation (2001-2006) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in the Heart and Vascular Institute. During this time, while supported on a NRSA Research Fellowship in the Departments of Bioengineering and Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Simon enrolled in an MS in Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh which he completed in 2007. He came on faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in 2006, supported via a K12/KL2 NIH Roadmap/NICHD University of Pittsburgh Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Scholars Program (Roadmap K12). He received formal training in Clinical Research also at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Simon’s current research interests include the study of right ventricular structural and functional adaptation to pressure overload in pulmonary hypertension and heart failure.  Dr. Simon’s labs focus on 1) advanced analysis of clinical hemodynamics, 2) integration of imaging and hemodynamics to better assess right ventricular function, and 3) early phase clinical trials in pulmonary hypertension and heart failure.  He is also interested in outcomes research in end-stage heart failure patients treated with implantable devices (ventricular assist devices, cardiac resynchronization therapy).  His recent projects include assessment of right ventricular-pulmonary arterial coupling in pulmonary hypertension patients and its relation to outcomes, right ventricular strain analysis by echocardiographic speckle tracking to screen HIV patients for right ventricular dysfunction, and assessment of right ventricular myocardial biaxial biomechanics in a murine model of pressure overload. He has designed and runs multiple drug development clinical trials in pulmonary hypertension and heart failure including nitrite (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifiers: NCT01431313 and NCT03015402), metformin (NCT03629340), and albumin-bound rapamycin (NCT02587325). Dr. Simon is on the steering committee for several clinical trials. Dr. Simon has received research support from NIH, AHA, the Clinical Translational Science Institute of the University of Pittsburgh, and The Pittsburgh Foundation. Dr. Simon has reviewed papers for the Circulation, JACC: Heart Failure, JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Heart Rhythm, CHEST, Annals of Biomedical Engineering, AJP-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and Journal of Cardiac Failure among others.  He is on the editorial board for the Journal of Cardiac Failure and has been a member of grant review panels for the NIH and American Heart Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.  He is a member of the Heart Failure Society of America, the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, the American Heart Association, the Pulmonary Vascular Research Insitute and the Pulmonary Hypertension Society.
