Dr. Jonathan Rubin is Professor and Chairman in the Department of Mathematics and is an adjunct with the Department of Computational and Systems Biology at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also a Graduate Faculty Member, a Center for Neuroscience Graduate Training Faculty Member, and a Member of the Center for the Basis of Neural Cognition at Pitt. Dr. Rubin received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island.
Dr. Jonathan Rubin's research interests include: Multiple timescale dynamics, especially in neuronal networks; the role of connectivity patterns in shaping network activity; the dynamic mechanisms underlying respiratory pacemaker rhythms and other central pattern generation in the mammalian brainstem; network dynamics in the basal ganglia, with implications for motor disorders, particularly Parkinson’s disease; and, the dynamics of the acute inflammatory response and sepsis, including optimization of therapeutic interventions, model-based diagnostics, implications for traumatic brain injury, and associated issues of parameter estimation.
Dr. Rubin is an Editorial Board Member for SIAM Journal of Applied Mathematics (2012-present, currently Section Editor), SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems (2015-present), PLoS Computational Biology (2019-present), and Biological Cybernetics (2006-present). He has served as Chair and Program Director of the SIAM Special Interest Group on the Life Sciences. In addition, he is a member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, 1991-present (Activity Group in Dynamical Systems, 1993-present; Activity Group in Life Sciences, 2000-present), the Society for Neuroscience, 2005-present, and the Mathematical Association of America, 1990-1993, 1997-1998, 2001-present.
