    Frank Witte, MD, PhD

Dr. Frank Witte is the Endowed Professorship Synthes "Bioactive Implants for Musculoskeletal Regeneration” in the Julius Wolff Institute for Biomechanics and Musculoskeletal Regeneration at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh, and a Guest Researcher at Shenzen Institut of Technology (SIAT), China. Dr. Witte is the Global Site Coordinator, National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) on Revolutionizing Biodegradable Metals. He is also responsible for establishing a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) for University of Pittsburgh students in laboratories located in Hannover.
Educated in Germany, Dr. Witte attended the University of Saarbrücken for his undergraduate training. He received both his MD and PhD at the Hannover Medical School. Dr. Witte’s research interests include:
    • Bone biology, degradable biomaterials, biodegradable magnesium alloys, microtomography, cell culture, animal models
    • Immune response to biomaterials (in-vitro and in-vivo)
    • Synchrotron-radiation based microtomography
    • In-vivo fluorescence imaging for biomaterial-host-interaction
    • Establishing new in-vitro and in-vivo methods for research on biomaterials – especially biodegradable metals,
    • Scaffolds for regenerative approaches in musculoskeletal applications (ligament and cartilage replacement)
Dr. Witte holds memberships in the European Society for Biomaterials, the International Chinese Hard Tissue Society, and the International Bone Research Association. He is a reviewer for the journals Biomaterials, Acta Biomaterialia, Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A, Materials Letters, and Advanced Engineering Materials. Dr. Witte holds four patents in the area of biomedical magnesium alloys. View a list of Dr. Witte’s publications here.
