Dr. Eva Schmelzer is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. She came to Pitt in 2008.
In 1998, she received her Diploma in Biology from the Georg-August-University in Göttingen, Germany. She completed her PhD studies on liver cell biology in the lab of Dr. Augustinus Bader at the German Research Center for Biotechnology in Braunschweig, Germany, and received her PhD in Biology (summa cum laude) from the Technical University Braunschweig, Braunschweig, Germany, in 2002. She performed postdoctoral studies on cell biology and liver stem cell biology in the labs of Dr. Augustinus Bader (University of Leipzig, Germany), Dr. Lola M. Reid (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina), and Dr. Christof Niehrs (German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Germany).
Dr. Schmelzer’s major research interests include stem cells, especially those of the liver, their characterization, and their role in development and pathological conditions. She is also interested in translating these findings to applications in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
Dr. Schmelzer is a member of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) and the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS). She is an Invited Editor for World Journal of Hepatology. She is also a reviewer for many publications, including Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Biotechnology Journal, BMC Developmental Biology, Cell Biochemistry and Function, Cells Tissues Organs, Differentiation, Experimental Biology and Medicine, Expert Review of Medical Devices, Expert Opinion on Biological Therapies, FEBS Journal, Haematologica, Hepatology, Immunotherapy, International Journal of Artificial Organs, International Journal of Nanomedicine, Journal of Cellular Physiology, PLOS ONE, Rejuvenation Research, Stem Cells and Development, Stem Cells, Tissue Engineering, Translational Research, Toxicology Research, World Journal of Gastroenterology, World Journal of Hepatology, and World Journal of Stem Cells.
