Dr. Dietrich A. Stephan is the CEO, Chairman, and Founder of NeuBase Therapeutics, which is developing a new class of precision genetic medicines to address rare and common diseases at the base level. At NeuBase, he brings his full experience and deep expertise in genetic diseases, personalized medicine, and first-in-class therapeutic development to redefine medicine for the millions of patients with limited treatment options. Dr. Stephan identified the molecular basis of dozens of rare and common diseases published extensively in journals such as Science, the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Genetics, PNAS and Cell, and has helped launch 14 biotechnology companies to advance novel molecular diagnostics and first-in-class therapeutics to market. These companies include Navigenics, a pioneer in direct-to consumer genomic testing; Pendulum, microbiome-modulating therapies; and Peptilogics, deep machine learning to develop peptide therapies. He was an early advisor to Guardant Health, a leader in liquid biopsy for cancer detection and personalized treatment, and part of the team that developed Genia Technology’s single molecule electrical detection DNA sequencing platform. His distinguished career in academia includes serving as Deputy Director for Discovery Research and Chair of the Neurogenomics Division at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC. He has held academic affiliations with Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University, University of Arizona, and Children's National Medical Center. Dr. Stephan did his fellowship at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, and his B.Sc. from Carnegie Mellon University.
