Dr. Bernard J. Costello serves as the Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He also is a Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Costello is Chief of Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and a surgeon with the Cleft and Craniofacial Center. He is Co-Director of the Dentofacial Interdisciplinary Team, and the Director of the Pediatric Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Fellowship Program at the School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Costello earned his doctorates in both dentistry and medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. Following his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, he completed a Craniofacial Fellowship at the Posnick Center for Facial Surgery and Georgetown University Medical Center.
Dr. Costello has served in leadership positions with a number of professional societies and foundations. He is currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, as the President of the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association, and as the Past-President of the American Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Dentists.
Dr. Costello has been principal and co-investigator on a number of grants and research contracts including: Novel Synthetic Bone Craniofacial Regeneration, which is funded by the Department of Defense, and Bone Tissue Engineering Using Natural Materials, which is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the National Science Foundation. He has also been an investigator for studies evaluating tissue adhesives, and the pathology causing craniosynostosis. He has been an author on numerous peer-reviewed publications as well as an editor and contributor to many texts focused on pediatric craniomaxillofacial surgery. Dr. Costello regularly lectures internationally on pediatric and adult facial deformities and craniofacial regenerative translational research.
